Sunlight finds its way past the mountain, leaves, windows and curtains to the bedside table at Omid Hospital. The hospital slowly wakes: corridors become busier, a nurse receives a patient with careful notes, cleaners begin work, doors open, lifts move and doctors go from room to room. A patient touches a wall for support while taking the steps their doctor has recommended.
Few notice the gold plaques above doors, equipment and treatment rooms. Each carries a person's name. To a visitor it may be one more name, but to Omid it means much more: the story of someone who decided to give part of their own life to strangers they would never have the chance to know.
Even a patient lying on the radiotherapy machine may barely notice the plaque at the entrance. The donor may never know how often that room and machine have sheltered a family's anxiety or helped someone receive treatment.
These names shine between familiarity and anonymity, fear and hope, life and death. People come and go, money is spent, buildings age and equipment wears out, but memories remain.
Across Omid, we keep these generous names alive and draw from them the deeper meaning of hope. They carry values, meaning and behavior, reminding us that Omid was built through kindness, trust, compassion and social responsibility as well as money.
We are proud of this symbolic inheritance, valued for keeping a culture alive in which people can make a difference to lives they will never personally encounter.
When you pass a gold plaque, remember that someone before you thought of another person's suffering, cared and gave. Their name continues through others' lives. Here, the walls breathe.
