The West Azerbaijan Charity Association for Supporting Cancer Patients (Omid) is a non-governmental organization established in 1990 in response to the widespread prevalence of cancer, economic and cultural deprivation, and the shortage of medical facilities in the region. It was founded to address the medical, financial, and emotional challenges caused by this major issue, and today, with the support of public donations, it has been able to provide valuable services in treatment, social work, and cancer prevention.

Omid Hospital and Research & Treatment Center is one of the achievements of the association’s members and supporters. Since the first phase began operating in 1996, it has served a large number of patients from the province, neighboring provinces, and visitors from nearby countries such as Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

At the World Cancer Day conference held in Tehran in February 2013, the association was selected as one of the country’s top NGOs in the field of cancer and received a plaque of honor and a trophy from UNESCO.

Omid Charity has also received the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System certificate from D.A.S and the UKAS accreditation body in the United Kingdom. In 2017, at the International Hospital Construction Congress, it received an honor trophy and was recognized among the top five hospital-building charities in Iran.

They have no right to make withdrawals from or conduct transactions with the association.

Omid’s budget is funded through public participation and various forms of humanitarian support, including cash donations, goods, services, and technical expertise. It does not receive any fixed government budget, although in special cases it has also received financial support from public-sector institutions.

From the beginning of Omid’s activities through the end of 2021, more than 100,000 cancer patients in need have benefited from the treatment and support services provided by the Omid organization.

The Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy Clinic of Omid Charity provides treatment services to more than 100 patients every day.

Omid Charity Association for Supporting Cancer Patients, as a non-governmental organization born out of the voluntary motivation of its founders, is considered one of the experienced Iranian institutions in benefiting from volunteer support.

Over the years, volunteers have provided valuable services through youth and women’s groups to help the organization achieve its goals. In recent years, the association has seen major changes in its approach to engaging volunteers, and today their strong presence can be seen across many areas. In fact, the daily participation of volunteers now provides a significant part of the organization’s human resource needs.

Today, we are proud to have more than 300 young volunteers and more than 50 talented women from this city active in Omid Charity.

Relying on public donations, Omid Charity not only helps cover treatment expenses, but also supports patients in the following areas:

• Accommodation for non-local patients in need and patients from other countries, together with one family member
• Medical and psychological counseling
• Providing a 15-day food package
• Transportation cost assistance

Sending donation acknowledgments, invitations to support programs, text messages, postal packages, and other communications, together with transparent reporting of activities, helps strengthen the credibility of Omid Charity and deepen donor trust.

Due to the variety of support methods across different projects, the association’s commitment to safeguarding donations entrusted by supporters, the preference of many donors to give anonymously, the difficulty of issuing a unified card for all types of supporters, and the need to prevent any possible misuse, the executive board has decided not to issue membership cards.
